Returning to our nature

Blog Post No. 7

The journey of remembering the truth within requires us to return to our nature.

Returning to our nature can have various meanings due to different perspectives and levels. In this context, the most important meaning is returning to the truth of who we are i.e. remembering our natural essence within. As I mentioned in my last blog post, the truth can only be memorized by turning inwards. An inner journey with the intention and focus to reconnect with one's inner essence, i.e. the soul, the inner Self, the true Self, the spirited essence, the true inner nature, ...

When you hear the word “nature”, you probably associate it with the natural world around you and less with your spirited essence within, do you? The reason for this is that we are extremely fixated on the outer world that we tend to overlook the natural inner world – whereas the inner world would be always at the forefront in a state of full soul memory.

Returning to our nature refers also to spending time in the forests (with the trees, …), at the waters (lakes, ocean, creeks, rivers, …), with animals and connecting with the elements, etc. Spending time in nature helps tremendously to trigger forgotten feelings that there are deeper levels behind everything we perceive in any given moment. Speaking from my own experience, I can say that spending time in nature plays a big part in reawakening my memory of who I really am. Just recently, I spent three months in a remote place in the woods and this allowed me to integrate and innerstand more of myself and the world around me.

The natural world can support us in remembering who we are in this life.

Waking up to the sounds of nature and the sunrise brings us closer to the natural world.

Things you can do easily to spend more time in nature

Some of the following ideas may be obvious and simply – and they should be! It is important that they are easy to integrate in our lives and it is more likely that we actually do them regularly. Get inspired and enjoy the nature around you!

  • Go into the nearby forest and explore a new path that you have never taken before.

  • Explore a new spot in nature e.g. hiking area, … near to your place – something you always wanted to do. Even if you have been there before, contemplate the area with fresh eyes.

  • Observe the animals i.e. insects and other domestic animals in their natural environment. I would not recommend going to a zoo as these animals are not in their natural environment and we want to focus on reconnecting with the real natural world.

  • Go swimming in a natural body of water (not a swimming pool!), e.g. ocean, lake, river, ... – even if it is cold, be prepared for a dip. Bring your swimwear and a towel.

  • Watch the sunrise and sunset – find the best place in your area for watching the sunrise and sunset. Try different locations as they can vary depending on the time of year.

  • Go to a waterfall – even if it's cold, try to take a “shower” or just get your feet wet.

  • Walk barefoot outside and explore the different textures under your feet. Go barefoot at home too - without socks, really barefoot. Shoes and socks can hinder the natural movement of our feet and toes. So try to walk barefoot as often as possible!

  • Observe the stars and look for the best place near your home with the least light pollution.

  • Observe the plants and flowers – pay attention to the seasonal changes they undergo.

  • Observe nature under different weather conditions, e.g. go into the forest on a rainy day and listen to the rain falling on the leaves.

  • Listen to the sounds of nature, e.g. the birds, a stream, the wind, ... Avoid using headphones when you are out in nature, as this cuts off your connection to the natural world.

  • Play an instrument in nature and co-create a song together.

Get creative and interact with the natural world!

Here are some additional comments to vary your experiences

Consider visiting these places in nature at different times of the year and day (early morning, evening, ...), as nature may change a lot and the atmosphere can be very different. It is also important to do something different each time to stimulate your curiosity and not fall into “autopilot mode”.

Consider to make a new habit out of spending time in nature – simply being far from the hustle in the cities and also staying away from the artificial online world. From my experience, I can tell that spending time in the forest on a regular basis really supported me on my journey and still does. If it's not possible for you to go to a forest daily or regularly, then go to a forest as often as possible during the week. Remember that a park in a city cannot be compared to a forest.

Give it a try, because it's really important to cultivate the connection to the real natural world.
